CHAPTER 12

Kat’s statement, “The more the merrier,” turned out to be truer than they’d initially thought.

Not only did their party expand to Blaine, Lacie, and Florence, unfortunately Tyler couldn’t get time off, but also to Mitzi and her husband Rex. Rex happened to have some vacation time, and he and Blaine had become good friends, so he decided to join them.

Mitzi was always game for a vacation, and managed to get her work in the acupuncture clinic scheduled in such a manner that she could take off for a few days and join them.

Lennon would have come, too, but a vacation for her was nothing short of a military operation that had to be planned at least a year in advance. She had too many responsibilities to attend to and simply couldn’t get away.

Marion couldn’t come, because she couldn’t afford the cost of the trip. Blaine had offered to pay her family’s way, but she’d acted embarrassed and declined. “Besides, we have to stay here for more tests for Betsy,” she’d said, although Kat wasn’t sure if that was just an excuse.

So a party of five adults and the baby flew out just two days after the discovery, thanks to Jethro’s technical wizardry, that Richard had recently purchased airline tickets to St. Lucia.

“I think you could possibly be the best friend ever, Kat,” Mitzi said, as they prepared to step off the plane into the heat of St. Lucia. “What a wonderful spur-of-the-moment decision.”

“Are you sure?” Kat said. She wasn’t quite feeling her sunny self since her revelation with Lennon. “It’s not the best time of the year to come to the Caribbean. November, December, or perhaps January would have been better.”

“My, my, my,” Mitzi said, taking her sunglasses off the top of her head where they were resting against her topknot, and putting them on. “You know how people see a silver lining in a terrible situation. I think you’re doing the opposite just now. That’s not like you, Kat. Are you all right?”

Kat wasn’t able to respond as they descended the stairs of the plane onto the tarmac, since the sound of a nearby plane was too loud, but when they got to the side of the runway and were walking through a shaded walkway, they were free to speak. Blaine and Rex were behind them, helping Lacie with all the baby paraphernalia she’d had to bring on the plane.

“Really, I’m not quite feeling myself,” Kat told Mitzi. “Since I made the decision to stop investigating, I just wish it was all behind me. I’ve been putting my family and friends in danger, feeling guilty about it, and yet here you all are, right in the middle of my drama.”

Mitzi put her arm around her briefly. “We’re all adults who chose to be here. Well, apart from Florence, but Lacie made the decision to bring her along. You didn’t urge us to come. You discouraged us, in fact. Very rudely, I might add.”

She giggled and winked at Kat. “Just kidding.
